Tool rooms are found in almost all manufacturing plants although they may be called by other names, such as storeroom, machine shop, or repair shop. However, the work done is virtually the same: the maintenance and repair of the cutting tools used in the manufacturing operation.

- Surface grinding - generally wheels 355mm diameter and smaller.
- Cylindrical grinding - generally wheels 406mm diameter and smaller.

Wheels of all sizes and shapes are available. Most wheels used in tool room applications are vitrified in grit sizes 36 to 220 and in grades H through to N.
